Taranaki futures proudly celebrates the build-a-trailer 2020 success

The Build a Trailer programme as a collaborative partnership with WITT and Engineering Taranaki Consortium has been another example of how Taranaki Futures connects an industry with education partners. Known a ‘BaT’ the programme was designed for year 11-12 secondary school students interested in pursuing an engineering pathway. Modeled off the successful ‘build a bach’ project launched in 2014, the students on the programme got the best of tutor learning and industry experience.

HOW the build a trailer programme WORKed

Taranaki students enrolled on the WITT Trades Academy Engineering Level 3 course will ‘build a trailer’ as part of the programme. Students spent one day a week on campus at WITT building the trailer, and a second day out gaining industry experience with Engineering Taranaki Consortium members.

The programme ran as a pilot in 2019 and increased student enrolments in 2020 – albiet the challenges of Covid-19 – the students and the work placements offered through Engineering Taranaki Consortium member companies which also extended to the amazing support from McCurdy Trucks, EnergyWorks and SMS Stratford in 2020, great learning results were achieved. The programme at WITT ran under Trades Academy for the full year, with the first term spent studying at WITT to learn the basics before getting into the trailer build and work experience over the remaining school terms.

The 2021 programme will be run as a partnership between WITT and Engineering Taranaki Consortium. So contact WITT directly or talk to your secondary school careers team to talk about doing the BaT in 2021.
